A BETTER TYPE OF PLASTIC

SOLMERATM was developed to save the world from plastic pollution. Home to the only thermally activated polymer decomposition technology, SOLMERA provides a new way to address the persistence of plastics in our environment. While most plastic alternatives can cost four times more than their standard plastic counterparts, SOLMERATM products provide the same value and barely raise the price.

Our drop-in solution enables products to rapidly decompose after shelf life, leaving no trace of microplastics. With SOLMERATM, what used to be plastic becomes water, carbon dioxide, and less than 1% harmless salts. This decomposition process takes on average just 2 years, after a pre-programmed shelf life of two or four years. No sorting and disposal in scarce industrial composting facilities. No change in consumer experience. No microplastic leftovers. Just packaging that expires, as nature always intended.

PRODUCT APPLICATIONS

While SOLMERATM is working to develop solutions that address all common single-use plastics, we have chosen to tackle the most problematic plastics first; PP and PE. Companies wishing to reduce the environmental impact of their packaging struggle to find alternatives for these hard-to-recycle items. With SOLMERA’s first generation polymer decomposition technology, the focus is on these common low-cost rigid and flexible products, primarily for food, medical, and agricultural uses.

HOW SOLMERATM WORKS

PRODUCTION

Directly mixed into existing pellets at a dosage of only one to two percent.

Programmable Shelf Life

Products are programmed to last two or four years, based on shelf life needed.

Use + Recycling Option

Commonly recycled packaging is printed with a ‘recycle by’ date to inform consumers.

Landfill

When recycling is not an option, dispose as usual. No special facility or sorting needed.

Thermal Activation

Anywhere above room temperature, molecular breakdown will begin.

Decomposition and Biodegradation

Broken polymer chains are digested by bacteria, leaving behind only water, carbon dioxide, and harmless salts.

Solmera’s Key Benefits

  • The most affordable alternative plastic
  • No industrial composting facility needed
  • No need for UV light due to ambient decomposition
  • No microplastics (3rd party verified)
  • No toxicity and safe for food contact (3rd party verified)
  • Zero to low oxygen requirements
  • Compatible with recycled and recyclable resins
  • Functionality with rigid and flexible plastics with high transparency
  • On the market with scalable production capacity
  • No disruption in standard manufacturing process

PROFITABLE SUSTAINABILITY

Reducing global waste with minimal cost increase, SOLMERA’s thermal decomposition technology offers a world-class incremental value opportunity for all stakeholders.

Frequently asked questions

The name SOLMERATM pays homage to Latin sol and Greek meros. These words, meaning sun and part communicate the SOLMERATM process of harnessing thermal power to reduce plastic to its component parts of water, carbon dioxide, and organic biomass.

Yes. Technically, all plastics are biodegradable to varying degrees, given a long enough timespan. To avoid greenwashing and abuse of this term, many regions have banned the words biodegradable and degradable entirely.

The SOLMERATM additive is lab tested to be 100% biodegradable in 4–6 years (including pre-programmed shelf life), in any biologically active environment above 25°C / 77°F. Due to the lack of globally consistent regulations and definitions of biodegradation, the term rapidly decomposable plastic more appropriately defines the unique SOLMERATM compound. Please contact us for specific test reports that qualify these claims.

No, SOLMERA’s compound is unique in that it is activated by either heat or light. Thermo-biodegradation is SOLMERA’s key advantage, allowing products to decompose in landfill conditions with little to no oxygen or light present.

SOLMERATM is not intended for products with shelf lives longer than 4 years. SOLMERA products should not be stored above room temperature or in direct sunlight, as this risks decreasing the shelf life.

SOLMERATM products show no signs of aging before their pre-programmed shelf life is complete, when stored in the conditions above.

It is not advisable to recycle SOLMERATM products after the breakdown process has begun. We advise manufacturers to label all commonly recycled products with a ‘recycle by’ date to inform consumers that their packaging has an expiration date.
Yes, we highly recommend recycling as the best end of life option for all SOLMERATM products. The SOLMERATM compound does not impact the recyclability of plastics. When mixed with conventional plastics in the recycling process, the active compound is diluted well beyond effective levels. Always check with recycling facilities in your region to confirm whether they accept the products in question.
Yes, though not in a time frame commonly accepted by composting facilities and current environmental legislation. After the pre-programmed shelf life, SOLMERATM products decompose into water, carbon dioxide, and less than 1% harmless salts in an average of 2 years, but most composting facilities require complete decomposition in three to six months.
Yes, SOLMERATM can be integrated with recycled resins just as it can with virgin resins. Achieving a one to two percent additive content is all that is needed to initiate the breakdown process.
Yes, the SOLMERATM additive is certified non-toxic, microwave safe, and free of heavy metals. It has been SGS tested and is FDA and EU compliant.
